The SuSu Financial Literacy Academy is a 12-month structured program for East Oakland residents ready to change their relationship with money — whether you are rebuilding credit, saving for the first time, or preparing to buy a home or start a business.

Curriculum

Financial Foundations

  • Building a household budget that survives a hard month
  • Understanding credit reports, scores, and disputes
  • Banking without predatory fees
  • Setting and protecting an emergency fund

Building Wealth

  • Paying down debt strategically
  • Homeownership readiness and down payment planning
  • Introduction to investing and retirement accounts
  • Protecting assets: insurance, wills, and beneficiaries

Cooperative Economics

  • How SuSu lending circles work and how to run one
  • Cooperative ownership and community investment models
  • Supporting and starting neighborhood businesses
  • Keeping dollars circulating in East Oakland

How It Works

Session Format

12 months of in-person and virtual sessions, with weekly Tuesday classes from 6–8 PM.
